When someone looks up a used car, mileage is usually the second thing they check after the price. It's a rough proxy for how much life is left in the engine, transmission, suspension, and every other wearing part — and buyers price that risk in, whether or not they can explain the math.
The "average miles per year" benchmark
Most valuation tools — ours included — start from a baseline of roughly 12,000 miles driven per year. A five-year-old car with 60,000 miles is right on pace. The same car with 100,000 miles has racked up nearly double the expected wear, and it tends to be priced accordingly. A car with only 30,000 miles at five years old, on the other hand, often commands a premium, since low-mileage examples usually mean less wear on high-cost components like the transmission and suspension.
Why mileage and age don't move together
Two cars from the same model year can have wildly different values once mileage diverges. A commuter car that spent five years on the highway might have 90,000 miles but relatively gentle wear (steady speeds, fewer stop-and-go cycles), while a low-mileage car that sat unused for long stretches can develop its own problems — dried-out seals, flat-spotted tires, a battery that needed replacing anyway. Appraisers and dealers know this, which is why mileage is a strong signal but never the only one they check.
Where mileage matters most
- Vehicles under warranty — high mileage can burn through the remaining coverage faster than the calendar does.
- Vehicles nearing common maintenance milestones (60k, 100k, 150k) — buyers often mentally price in the upcoming service.
- Commercial and fleet vehicles, where mileage is usually the single dominant factor in resale value.
